Elevision’s Blog
Every year, truly amazing short films play at festivals around the world. They dazzle audiences and win prizes. The filmmakers’ visions are embraced and championed by the festival organizers. After the festival circuit, however, the picture isn’t as bright.
Lacking commercial options, many short filmmakers consider uploading their work to a video hosting site. But YouTube and Vimeo are designed to sell ads, making them less-than-ideal homes for artful, visionary filmmaking. Consequently, many of the best filmmakers opt not to put the work online at all.
This is a huge loss, both culturally and commercially. Great short films enrich the spirit. They deserve a home online that is designed for them — their own “theater”, where any curious mind can buy an unobstructed view and let the film wash over them.
We believe there would be a cultural renaissance if “short filmmaker” were a viable career. If there were a place for the best filmmakers to sell their work, and for viewers to discover them, we would experience a surge of visionary storytelling.
With the hope of unlocking this vast and hidden potential, we proudly introduce Elevision — a carefully-curated collection of amazing short films that you can preview and buy.
Live now at elevision.com is our no-frills beta site presenting some of the best short films in recent years, most of them available for the first time online. No comments, no ads, no “related videos”, no “like” buttons. Just the best short films we could find, for sale, in HD. Stream ‘em on the site or download ‘em for later.
We’re debuting with a small slate, including, right now, the online premiere of Oh Willy…, a stop-motion masterpiece from Belgian filmmakers Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels. This short has won awards at over 65 festivals, but wasn’t available online until today.
You’ll find other amazing shorts, including Wrong Cops: Chapter One by visionary director Quentin Dupieux, starring Marilyn Manson as a teenager, Pioneer by indie-auteur David Lowery and starring Will Oldham, aka “Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy”, Sundance-winner Deeper Than Yesterday, and the hilariously surreal Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke, to name a few.
These are Elevision’s early days. In the coming months, we’ll expand our catalog and move onto new viewing platforms. Beyond that, our long-term mission is for short films to join the ranks of features and TV shows as a form of entertainment that everyone happily pays for. Until then, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.
We’d love for you to share any feedback, ideas, or perspective you have to help bring this vision to life.
Most importantly, we hope you enjoy the films!
Cheers,Jake Lodwick & Malcolm Pullinger
PS. If you’re going to SXSW, we’ll be talking about Elevision on Sunday, March 10th, at a Meet The Insiders conversation. Come say hello, and consider following Elevision on Twitter.
